Kawariki and the Shark Man by Holly R

Kawariki and the Shark Man

1.Wiremu Grace has retold the myth/legend of Kawariki and the Shark Man
2.Kawariki-a woman to be married to someone she doesn’t love, snuck out to see the person she truly loves. She shares a secret relationship with Tutiri, when her father finds out about two he takes away Tutiri’s humanity and she is left filled with pity.
Tutiri-a man who has feeling for a woman-Kawariki-is banished to the ocean by her father Matakite in shark form. When Kawariki’s betrothed and his tribe arrives Hinemoana overturns the boat but instead of avenging himself Tutiri helps the tribe to shore-this shows Tutiri is kind and forgiving.
Matakite-is a protective father of his daughter Kawariki. When he finds the couple on the beach he is angry at Tutiri for breaking the rule and talking to Kawariki,he banishes Tutiri to the ocean. When Tutiri saves the tribe he sees what he has done and reverses the spell so Tutiri can marry his daughter.
Hinemoana [Goddess of the sea]-Feels pity for Tutiri and heals him enough so he can see Kawariki every month. She sees Matakite[one of her descendents] at the welcoming and is angry at him for what he had done to Tutiri,to avenge Tutiri she overturns the boats.

3.By the shore-Usually night time, clear sky full of stars, washing of the waves, bushes, quiet,in the hills.

4.The myth/legend was trying to explain what happened between Tutiri and Karawiki-How they fell in love and with their strong will, worked their way around Matakite finding out about them meeting up in secret. Also how Kawariki and Tutiri married and continued to have an unbreakable bond.

5.In the beginning Tutiri worked for the tribe alongside the slaves. The years passed and Tutiri grew into a young man.He had a special friend called Kawariki, later she was betrothed to a man from a neighbouring tribe.Tutiri and Kawariki are forbidden from seeing each other.Kawariki wanted to still see Tutiri, they would send each other messages and occasionally met in secret. In the middle Matakite[Kawariki’s father]finds out about them meeting in secret and banishes Tutiri to the ocean as a shark.Hinemoana sees what happens and fills Kawariki’s tears with healing powers. When the neighbouring tribe arrives for the wedding Hinemoana takes vengeance against Matakite, she overturns the boats with powerful waves. In the end Tutiri sees what happens and saves the tribe, Matakite sees the action and and decides Tutiri should be able to marry Kawariki. The tribes celebrate this marriage.
8.The illustration is of Kawariki and Tutiri as he is in shark form it adds to the story by showing how Kawariki still cared about Tutiri in the same way.

10.Tutiri was born into a family that lived near the coast. He had many jobs and worked alongside slaves which made the job easier. Tutiri envied his friends when they were being instructed as future leaders and he was kept to the gardens. Tutiri was now a young man,he had a special friend called Karawiki- she was the daughter of a very powerful chief called Matakite. She was to be a future leader. One day Matakite announced Karawiki was betrothed to a man from a neighboring tribe. Karawiki and Tutiri were then forbidden to see each other. Still the strong willed couple wanted to see each other they sent secret messages and occasionally meet in secret, this happened because Karawiki didn’t want to stay with a man she didn’t love.

Matakite was suspicious of Kawariki and decided to follow her that night, when he found the two meeting in secret he cast a vicious spell on Tutiri that turned him into a shark. Kawariki dragged Tutiri out of the bush and into the water where his lifeless began moving,Hinemoana saw what happened and filled Kawariki’s tears with magic. Kawariki’s soon to be husband and his tribe were arriving on boats Matakite prayed for a safe crossing along with the rest of the tribe, Hinemoana remembered what happened to Tutiri and wanted vengeance for what Matakite did to him,the seas grew rough and the motion overturned the boats. Tutiri saw what happened but didn’t want revenge instead he save the tribe and brought them back to shore. Matakite saw this action and decided Kawariki should marry Tutiri. The tribes had a celebration together, in the following years Kawariki and Tutiri became trusted leaders. They had many offspring, born with the distinctive red moko of a shark.

The Great Legend About Why Volcanoes Erupt by Liam M

The Great Legend About Why Volcanoes Erupt.
Pele is known as the God of earthquakes and volcanoes in Hawaiian myths and legends.

One day, billions of years ago, Pele, the God of volcanoes, was having a great day. But then Hades, the God of the underworld, came up to Pele and tricked her into becoming evil!!! As a result, Pele erupted all of the volcanoes! The volcano was vomiting out lava and had flaming boulders bursting out. But when she saw all the innocent people dying right in front of her, she stopped the volcanoes. When Hades found out about this he was furious! He went back to his palace with anger filling him while trying to come up with another plan to make Pele erupt every volcano.
These days volcanoes don’t erupt that often. But hang on you may be wondering why volcanoes still erupt if Pele turned back to being a good God? Well here’s the answer. You know how Hades went back to his palace with anger filling him while trying to come up with another plan to make Pele erupt every volcano with bursting flaming boulders and spewing lava. Well sometimes Pele gets short visits from Hades and every now and then she just snaps and gives in to Hades and erupts one or two volcanoes. But luckily, most of the time Pele doesn’t give in to Hades. Sometimes Pele gets angry and only lava comes out. But for a volcano to  burst out flaming boulders and spewing out lava, she needs to entirely give in to Hades and burst into anger.

Vesuvius Myth by Evelyn

Vesuvius and Lena

Vesuvius was a nice mountain but sometimes he got angry at the passing river alongside him, because she had the power to bring happiness to the world and she could move. He also had some love that he wanted to share with this river. When the mountain was angry from deep inside him a terrible volcano would arise who had the power to bring hatred and sadness to all things. When he got very angry he would spill a shower of lava and spit out some ash. The river led to a wonderful ocean and the poor volcano called Vesuvius was becoming even more and more sad and  self centered.

Vesuvius was not always a volcano and the river Lena was not always a river steaming through the remote valley. Lena and Vesuvius were once people living in Naples, Italy together on a farm next to a small mountain and a soundless stream. But one day they had a fight about who got the land to build a civilization on. That day Lena started to build on the mountain without including Vesuvius. The mountain cursed Lena and said, “Curse you old woman may you and your partner live in pain and anger.  You shall become a river and your partner will become a hot burning volcano that only brings hate to you. Curse you curse you!”.

Lena was heartbroken so she pretended that she wanted to run away so Vesuvius would wonder why he had become a volcano. But when Lena tried to run away she never could.

That day she melted down into a river and Vesuvius became rock and grew till he was as tall as the sun. Lena could never speak to him again. Vesuvius would howl and wail to her why he was a lonely Volcano. One day when the sun was scorching down on the city, Lena suddenly dried out.  Vesuvius cried his stone heart out and brought on a volcanic eruption and exploded. Hot burning Lava ran down the stream, which Lena used to be, into the ocean and overflowed the city and caused and death, destruction and sadness to all those around.

And that is why Mount Vesuvius erupted!

Volcano Myth by Nikita

Volcano Myth

A dark, murky cloud overlapped the sun as it spread across the evening sky. The roar of thunder and flash of lightning ripped through the deadly silence, a black figure emerged from the clouds and fell into the deep blue, the splash sent the body floating up to shore. The body of a girl lay covered in warm sand as the tide pushed rocks to surround her, soon there was no body to be seen. The villages had examined the pile and they realised that the girl that was washed up on shore was the Goddess of love, Athena. The pile of rocks grew and grew and created a beautiful volcano surrounded by nature, the vines grew up to the top while white flowers climbed around them.

A village had been hidden in the shelter of a beautiful forest, fires surrounded the village to keep out intruders but to also keep the villagers warm. Athena had created a lovely home for her people, but like all good things they must come to an end. A fierce storm covered the sky as a flash of lightning hit the chief’s hut, the villagers fled from their homes and scrambled up Mount Athena for cover. Once again a figure fell through the clouds, but this time the body was a boy. Fire surrounded the young boys body as he shot towards the island creating an earthquake, the villages trembled in fear as they climbed down Mount Athena to search the beach for the boy. But as the villagers had reached the bottom of the volcano, the boy was thrust up into another volcano but this time the volcano was covered in fire.

The boy that had fallen was called Ares, also known as the God of war. The villages hid in the trees in fear that another God would fall but no more did. For years the island lived in peace and the villagers rebuilt their houses, until… The trees danced violently in the harsh wind while the beach was overcome by massive waves. The waves grew from the ocean, bigger and bigger until a tsunami had evolved from the smaller waves. As the tsunami collided with Athena, her lava grew weak as the light from the top of her mountain dimmed. She grew weaker each day, as Ares found the meaning of love. His sympathy grew along with his heart, until one day Athena’s light had almost run out because she had been transferring her light into Ares, causing him to feel love. Ares’ heart had finally finished growing as he relit Athena’s too. The two stood happily above the clouds, while Athena sat, proud of herself for showing love to a God of war.

Why Volcanoes Erupt - Narrative Writing by Eden

Why Volcanoes Erupt

Once upon a time, Wera-Rangitoto and the scorching mountain beside her, Kohatu-Whakerewa were happy. Wera and Kohatu were best friends but Kino-Wai who lived around them hated it, and wanted to end it. Forever.

Wera and Kohatu were comfortable next to each other. They were chatting about the landscape around them, and telling one another legends about the lands. But, little did they know, Kino-Wai was seething with hate. She hated how they never talked to her. How they thought she was just another thing, another ocean, a mindless ocean.
“Well, lets see how those two mountains think when I drag them down to the seabed.” Kino-Wai spat the words out spitefully.

Kino-Wai lay still, calm, happy. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike. She watched as they fell asleep. Kino-Wai knew she had to wait for a couple of hours, so they would then be in a deep, silent sleep. Kino-Wai, with the help of her friend Marama, made gentle waves that lapped at the base of the volcanoes to settle them and comfort them.

As Marama stood in his place right above her, Kino-Wai gathered her strength. Rua Te Moana was underneath her, waiting for her to push her water into the earth’s mantle so he could emerge and drag Wera down. Marama, who waited patiently for the others to be ready, sent signals to Kino-Wai. It was time. Kino-Wai poured all her strength into the earth’s mantle. Rua Te Moana jumped up and grabbed Wera. Wera screamed, and this awoke Kohatu. Kohatu, being the smart one, grabbed some of the rocks from his body and threw them into Wera, hoping to make her heavier to slow her down. Rua Te Moana started to struggle, he slowed down quite a lot until, eventually, he stopped. Wera was scared, and shaking with fear. She went to yell but, as she is kind-natured, kept her anger inside of her. This would turn out to be horrid for Kino-Wai. All was silent.

Wera kept her anger inside of her, on the outside, she looked peaceful, but inside of her the rocks that Kohatu threw inside of her started to melt. Wera shook, she could not stand the silence or the anger, and as she went to scream the melted, hot rocks inside of her launched out of the top of her. The hot, red water slid down her body into Kino-Wai. Kino-Wai screamed and shouted. Kohatu was amazed at what his friend was doing.

As Marama slowly backed away, Wera-Rangitoto finally stopped. This left Kino-Wai quiet, tame and frightened
Every now and again when Kino-Wai puts a toe out of line, Kohatu or Wera will burn her throughout the night, or day. Kino-Wai is the scorching mountain’s pets and will obey them. This is why volcanoes erupt.

The Dragon Slayer by Bailey

  The Dragon Slayer
                                By Bailey E

It was a cold rainy night. Not the best night to go off hunting dragons, thought Caleb as he rode his horse down the rocky track. As he neared his destination, Caleb came across a blacksmith stall and had to fight the urge to buy that new sword that the blacksmith was making. Reluctantly he carried on. Dawn came and the rain stopped, Caleb finally reached the home of the dragon! He entered and he saw the fully-grown dragon at the far end scratching it’s back on the rocky walls. The dragon’s body was was a pale yellow and it’s eyes were a glinting black.

Caleb’s silver armour gave a clink as he swung off his horse and grabbed his sword and shield. He stoked his shield lovingly. He had engraved numbers onto it showing how many dragons he had killed. He yelled and ran at the dragon who immediately charged roaring furiously. The dragon breathed fire but Caleb’s shield was fire proof. He swung his sword, but the dragon dodged the blade. The dragon lifted her claws and she almost took off Caleb’s helmet. Caleb rolled away and came up against the wall. He lifted his sword but it got caught on a branch and wouldn’t come free. Anxiously, he looked up. The dragon was coming closer! The dragon opened it’s mouth and finally Caleb’s sword came free. He yelled triumphantly and dodged the flames. He planted his sword in the dragon's belly and the dragon roared in pain. He withdrew his sword, and the lifeless creature fell to the ground. Caleb went back to his horse. He stroked his beard and put his sword and shield away.

Suddenly, a noise from behind made him jerk around. Fire was coming out of the bush. Angrily, he grabbed his sword and advanced on the bush. A baby dragon came out to meet him. He turned away to leave, but the baby dragon held onto his legs and he toppled over. Annoyed at the dragon, Caleb yelled at it and made it shy away in fright. Caleb got back onto his horse, prepared to ride off, but his horse wouldn’t move. Caleb looked at the baby dragon who was over by the one he had just killed. The baby looked at him, scared. Then when the baby dragon burned his hand, he roared like a dragon and made the baby think that he wasn’t scary after all. The baby followed Caleb and eventually Caleb let him come with him. But what he didn’t realise, was that the baby dragon had two sisters! They were playing with each other but soon spotted Caleb. Caleb reluctantly let them on his horse but it was going to be a slow ride home because there was no room for him on the horse so he would have to walk.

That all happened years ago and now the dragons have grown up. They still are a bit of a nuisance, but Caleb still loves them and they help him in lots of different ways.
